Introduction to SM58 Multi-Turn Absolute Encoder (Solid Shaft)
The SM58 is a multi-turn absolute encoder with a solid shaft and rugged housing design, leveraging non-contact photoelectric reflection (M-code) technology. It is engineered for high-intensity mechanical movement positioning scenarios, featuring compact structure, high safety, and a maximum protection grade of IP65. This encoder excels in precision, offering 24Bits of single-turn position information (expandable up to 32Bits) and supporting multi-turn position data recording of up to 24Bits without power failure. It is widely applicable in motors, elevators, textiles, packaging, CNC, and other automation control fields.
In terms of physical specifications, the SM58 has an external diameter of 58mm and a thickness ranging from 36mm to 40mm, with available shaft diameters of 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm (D-type solid shaft, made of stainless steel). Four mounting flange options are provided: Type A (clamping flange, collar 36mm, 3-M3 with PCD 48mm), Type B (clamping flange, collar 56mm, 4-M4 with PCD 66mm), Type C (synchro flange, collar 36mm, 3-M3 & 3-M4 with PCD 48mm), and Type D (synchro flange, collar 50mm, 3-M4 with PCD 42mm). Connection methods include cable (standard length 1000mm, extendable up to 100m with customization marked as C+number) and socket (M12/M16/M23 male socket), and the encoder weighs approximately 420g.
For performance and functionality, the SM58 supports BiSS_C and SSI communication interfaces (compatible with RS422, using differential twisted-paired cables for signal and power transmission). Its communication clock frequency reaches up to 10MHz for BiSS and 5MHz for SSI, with an absolute position sampling period of ≤75ns and an internal single-turn position update rate of 15000kHz. It delivers an accuracy of ±80", a response speed of 6000 min⁻¹, and an allowable speed of ≤6000 rpm (restricted by mechanical limits). Position data jitter is ±2@18 Bits/r, ensuring stable and reliable position detection.
Electrical specifications include two supply voltage options: DC5V (4.75V-5.5V) and DC8-30V (7.75V-32V), with a maximum supply current of 120mA. A backup voltage (3.0V-4.2V, typical 3.6V) is supported, drawing a maximum backup current of 35μA to maintain multi-turn data without power. Absolute maximum ratings cover a storage temperature of -40°C and a junction temperature of -50°C.
Mechanically, the encoder has a starting torque of <0.05Nm (IP50) and <0.1Nm (IP65) at +20°C, an inertia moment of less than 3×10⁻⁶ kg·m², and can withstand radial loads of 60N and axial loads of 20N. The shell is made of aluminum alloy for durability.
Environmental parameters include an operating and storage temperature range of -40°C to +95°C, operating and storage humidity of 35-85% RH (non-condensing), vibration resistance (amplitude 1.52mm, 5-55Hz, 2 hours per X/Y/Z direction), and shock resistance (980m/s², 11ms, three times per X/Y/Z direction), with protection grades of IP50 and IP65.
Recommended accessories include cross-type couplings (M series) and diaphragm-type couplings (W series) with specific models and order numbers, as well as mounting cardboards (3 pieces per set, model 58C66, order number 03700733, made of aluminum alloy).
When using the SM58, note the following cautions: Avoid operating beyond temperature/humidity limits, rapid temperature changes, corrosive/flammable gas environments, and contact with dust, salt, metal powder, water, oil, or medicine. Prevent excessive vibration and shock. During installation, avoid excessive pressure on electrical components, conduct electrostatic assessments, separate encoder cables from motor power cables, ground the FG wires of motors/mechanical devices, and ensure effective grounding of shielding wires (not connected to the encoder). For wiring, operate within the specified supply voltage (accounting for voltage drop from cable length), avoid routing with other power lines in the same duct or parallel bundling, use twisted pairs, and do not apply excessive force to cables to prevent damage.
